Definitely a useful alternative to gmail. I gotta say though — setting up manually with gmail is pretty painless. When inserting your icloud email from the “Other” vendor option, you hit “Enter Manually” and add a one-time password generated from your account (over at appleid.apple.com/account/manage) and it “just works.” Granted it won’t have 2FA, but it’s about as straightforward as you can get without having an otherwise common domain like outlook.
